{"id":1294,"date":"2015-11-24T13:49:34","date_gmt":"2015-11-24T12:49:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/excellence-esthetique.fr\/?page_id=1294"},"modified":"2019-06-25T01:44:36","modified_gmt":"2019-06-25T00:44:36","slug":"otoplasty","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/excellence-esthetique.fr\/en\/otoplasty\/","title":{"rendered":"Otoplasty"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>What is an otoplasty\/ear surgery?<\/b><\/p>\n<hr>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em><strong>Otoplasty or cosmetic ear surgery is the procedure that allows\u00a0the correction of protruding ears :<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It can be performed in children as in adults<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It can be performed from the age of 7 years, at this age, the ears are almost fully grown.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The treatment of protruding ears (otoplasty) can only be surgical.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The intervention aims to permanently correct protruding ears by reshaping the cartilage, in order \u201crestick\u201d ears and obtain a symmetrical and natural appearance.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1873 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/excellence-esthetique.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/image31.jpg\" alt=\"image(3)\" width=\"464\" height=\"274\" srcset=\"https:\/\/excellence-esthetique.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/image31.jpg 464w, https:\/\/excellence-esthetique.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/image31-245x145.jpg 245w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 464px) 100vw, 464px\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Why have an otoplasty?<\/b><\/p>\n<hr>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em><strong>Protruding ears are a common minor malformation,<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Which generally associates the absence of a well defined antihelical fold, and a valgus of the concha.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and separation of the flag relative to the neck<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Uni- or bilateral, this malformation is often asymmetrical.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>The consultation:\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<hr>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">During the first consultation, your surgeon should be aware of your desires and after the examination he will inform you of the different possibilities adapted to your case.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Photographs will be made in order to follow the morphological evolution of your ears.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>What happens during an otoplasty?<\/b><\/p>\n<hr>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Duration of the operation:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the operation lasts 30 to 60 minutes, depending whether one or both ears are treated.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Hospitalization:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> outpatient (you enter and leave the clinic the same day). Hospitalization takes place the morning of surgery while fasting.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Type of anesthesia:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> local potentiated (Diaz-analgesia). In children, general anesthesia may be needed if the child is too fearful. Otherwise the anesthesia could be merely local. <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some drugs favoring the bleeding should not be taken during the 10 days preceding the intervention (aspirin, anti-inflammatory, anti-coagulants,...)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some drugs can be taken before surgery to reduce swelling and post-operative bruising.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The head and the hair should be carefully washed the day before the operation<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For boys, a very short hair cut is desirable. (For girls, a ponytail is ok)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Following the intervention:\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<hr>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><em>There are usually bruises and edema (swelling) of the ears that disappear in two to three weeks.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The stitches are removed after 2 weeks.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Until the removal of the threads, a protective headband should be worn day and night; then, it is still kept for 2 weeks only at night.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During this period, physical and sports activities with risk of contact should be avoided.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Returning to work \/ courses can take place the day after surgery,<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But a medical leave up to 15 days may be necessary, especially if the profession does not allow the wearing of the headband.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exposure to cold is not recommended for at least two months in view of the risk of frostbite due to the transient decrease in the sensitivity of the ears.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>The risks of an otoplasty:<\/b><\/p>\n<hr>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Otoplasty, although carried out primarily for aesthetic reasons, remains a surgery\u00a0carrying the same risks any medical procedure, however small it may be. We must distinguish the complications related to the surgery and those related to anesthesia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Regarding surgery:<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The vast majority of interventions happen without any problems and patients are fully satisfied with their result.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although rare, complications could include: slight asymmetry, small irregularities, narrowing of the orifice of the ear canal, feeling of the deep stitches.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These small defects, when they exist, are usually discreet and do not attract attention.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They remain accessible to a small \"touch\" that will be mostly under local anesthesia.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hematoma or infection may occur, as after any intervention, even if they are exceptional (for antibiotics relay).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Skin necrosis is exceptional (because of the jeopardization of the vascularization of the thin skin of the ear)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The appearance of a keloid scar (raised, behind the ear). Its occurrence requires intra-incisional injection of a corticosteroid.
